Sam was still contemplating his next move, when he saw the boat. All he could make out was a guy in red swim trunks standing in a boat, waving. The girls laughed and said, “Come on!” as they began swimming out toward the boat. Instinctively, Sam followed. About halfway out he looked back and was astounded by how far away the shore was. He could barely make out his buddies on the beach, and whenever a swell passed over him he lost sight of the beach completely. It was much too far back to the beach to turn around now. His only chance was to make it to that boat before he gave out.
